Car rental at Essaouira-Mogador Airport (ESU)

Essaouira-Mogador Airport (IATA code: ESU) is located 15 km south of the city, about 15 minutes by car. It's a small airport with flights from Paris (Ryanair, Transavia), London, Brussels and Marrakech.

Unlike traditional rental counters at the terminal, we work differently: Hassan meets you directly at the car park with your vehicle ready. No queuing, no signing 10 pages, no searching for the counter.

Delivery and return at the airport are 100% free. For returns, simply drop the vehicle at the car park and hand the keys to Hassan. Takes 5 minutes.

Practical tips for driving in Essaouira

Road conditions

Main roads (N1, R207) are in excellent condition. Tracks to Imsouane or the coast are fine in a 4x4. Avoid them in a city car after rain.

Fuel

Diesel costs about 12 MAD/litre (≈€1.10). Frequent petrol stations on the N1. Fill up before Imsouane; no station there.

Parking

Attendants in yellow vests watch over street parking (5-10 MAD). Free car park at Bab Doukkala is ideal for the medina. Your riad often has nearby parking.

Police checks

Frequent checkpoints on the Essaouira-Marrakech road. Respect speed limits (60 km/h in town, 100-120 km/h outside). Seatbelts mandatory.

The wind

Essaouira is called "the windy city". Watch out for gusts on the coastal road, especially in summer. The Duster handles them better than small cars.

Animals on the road

Goats, donkeys, camels… Stay alert in rural areas, especially at night. Honk on blind corners on small roads.

Questions about car rental in Essaouira

Can you drive on the beach with a rental car?+
No, driving on beaches is forbidden in Morocco and is not covered by insurance. For Sidi Kaouki or Moulay Bouzerktoun, park in the car park and walk.
Can you go to Marrakech and back in one day?+
Yes, it's 2.5 hours each way. Doable in a day but we recommend at least 2 days to enjoy it. One-way rental is also possible.
Does insurance cover dirt tracks?+
Basic insurance covers national and regional roads. Unpaved tracks are covered with the Dacia Duster (off-road insurance available). Ask Hassan.
When is the best time to visit Essaouira?+
March to June and September to November. Summer is very windy (great for kitesurfing but less pleasant for driving). Winter is mild (15-20°C) but can be rainy.
Can you cross the border with the car?+
No, our vehicles are not authorised to leave Morocco. The rental covers Moroccan territory only.
