Four roads to know from Essaouira
Sidi Kaouki: 25 km, 25 minutes. The locals' beach. Fine sand, powerful waves, sunsets that stay with you. Even in a Panda, the road is flawless. Stop at restaurant Tama for orange juice facing the horizon.
Imsouane: 80 km, 1h15. Our favourite. A fishing village nestled in a perfect bay. You choose your fish at the stall, they grill it before your eyes, 60 to 80 dirhams for the feast. The Duster is ideal for this road.
Marrakech: 190 km, 2h30. Through argan forests and a mountain pass. We offer one-way rentals: pick up your car here, drop it off there. Or the reverse.
Agadir: 175 km, 3h. A stunning coastal road via Taghazout and Tamraght. Drop-off available in Agadir.
Practical tips for driving with ease
Your national licence is sufficient if it's in Latin script, French, Belgian, Swiss, Canadian, British, American. No international permit needed. Minimum age: 21, with at least two years' experience.
For the best weather, aim for spring (March to May) or autumn (September-October): 20-25°C, little wind. Summer brings the trade winds, ideal for kitesurfing, a bit breezy for the beach. Winter is mild and quiet, with the lowest prices.
Fill up in Essaouira before heading out. Petrol stations thin out after Sidi Kaouki. Main roads are in excellent condition. Secondary roads to Imsouane are decent but sometimes narrow. One simple rule: drive during daylight.
For parking, the guarded car park outside Bab Sbaa costs about twenty dirhams a day. The airport is free. Everywhere else, it's easy, Essaouira is nothing like Marrakech on that front.
